Now and Forever: Chapter 1

Grayson had just put down his desk phone when his cell phone began to vibrate. Grabbing it, he paused only for a fraction of a second at the name on the screen. Normally, the private investigator only communicated through email; he never called.

 

Quickly, he pressed the green icon. "What's happened?" he answered roughly, his mind turning with dark possibilities.

 

"It's as I suspected last week," the man on the other end began. "She just sold the last of her things to a few other tenants in the building and she purchased a one-way plane ticket."

 

Grayson sat back in his chair and stared out the window of his office not really seeing anything as his mind went over the new information.

 

"And the destination of the ticket?" Grayson asked. Time around him paused as he waited for the investigator's answer.

 

From the investigator's last report, her browser history for Europe and Asia had increased significantly. She could decide to go anywhere. Somewhere even further than the sixteen hundred miles that separated them now.

 

On the other end of the line, Grayson could hear the familiar click and hiss of air being released from a canned drink. "Well, I honestly thought it was going to be Bali or maybe Ireland with how much information she collected on both. She has a whole folder on what to eat in Bali alone," the investigator observed, in a slow easy tone that purposely delayed the information Grayson was wanting.

 

Controlling his patience, Grayson forced himself to quietly listen to the PI.

 

Chuckling, the investigator finally got to the point. "But she surprised me. I logged into my backdoor to her network this morning and confirmed that she just bought a ticket to Houston International Airport and one rideshare back to Stardust Cove."
